Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical speciality that requires 4 to 6 additional years of hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training after graduation from dental school. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons manage a wide variety of problems relating to the mouth, teeth and facial regions. A full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures are practiced with expertise ranging from wisdom tooth removal to corrective jaw and facial reconstructive surgery, and dental implants to facial-cosmetic procedures. Oral Surgeons also are highly trained in techniques designed to rebuild bone structure with surgical intervention with optimal patient comfort. Additionally, oral surgeons also diagnose disease of the mouth and face, treat facial pain such as pain in the jaw joints, repair facial injuries such as severe lacerations and fractures of the jaw and face.
The surgical assistants are trained and qualified to aid in IV sedation / general anesthesia and assist surgery in both clinical and hospital setting. Patients vital signs including but not limited to the blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation levels are monitored before and after all IV sedation / general anesthesia procedures. Continuing education and training are required of all personnel, which include BLS (CPR), infection control, OSHA, and HIPPA training. Additional professional staff includes a Licensed practical nurse, an advanced nurse practitioner, a nurse anesthetist and an anesthesiologist.
